NOTES

When I was asked to write a piece for Christian County High School, I quickly learned this wasn’t just another performance. This was the performance—their final appearance at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference in 2026. With the school preparing to merge with another, this marked the end of an era.

But what struck me most wasn’t sadness or loss. It was pride. Determination. Confidence. No one seemed burdened by the change. Instead, there was a shared understanding: this was something to celebrate.

That spirit is what inspired the title of the piece—Enduring Embers. An ember may seem small, but its heat is fierce. It survives, it endures. What begins as a spark becomes a rhythm, a heartbeat of fire—driven by dedication, passion, and an unyielding will.

This piece reflects that energy. It's rhythmic, relentless—a musical dance of perseverance and pride. And just as an ember never fully fades, the spirit of Christian County High School will continue to burn brightly, long after the final note.

Because a flame may flicker, but the ember endures.

Forever burning. Forever shining.

Christian County High School Colonel Band

For over six decades, the Christian County High School Colonel Band has been a pillar of musical excellence, school pride, and community spirit. Established in 1959, the program became a symbol of dedication and artistry in Western Kentucky, inspiring generations of students to strive for greatness both on and off the field.

From its earliest days, the Colonel Band set a standard of distinction that would resonate for years to come.

Their performances have represented not only Christian County, but the Commonwealth of Kentucky, on some of the most prestigious national stages — including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Fiesta Bowl Parade, and the Cherry Blossom Parade, Bands of America Competitions, and many chamber ensembles represented at our state music conference.

As the Colonel Band closes its final chapter and joins with Hopkinsville High School in a new era of unity and collaboration, we pause to honor the rich legacy that has defined this program for more than sixty years. The Colonel Band’s tradition of excellence — built through discipline, passion, and heart — will forever echo through the memories, performances, and lives it has touched.

This commissioned work, premiered at the 2026 KMEA Professional Development Conference, stands as a musical tribute to that legacy — a reflection of the Colonel Band’s journey and a bridge to the bright future that lies ahead.
